Freshwater fishing in Poland

Poland has an extensive network of rivers, canals, and lakes. The main river systems — the Vistula (Wisła) and the Oder (Odra) — run through lowland terrain and hold a range of coarse species including carp (Cyprinus carpio), bream (Abramis brama), zander (Sander lucioperca), and pike (Esox lucius).

The Masurian Lake District in northeastern Poland — containing over 2,000 lakes — is one of the most productive freshwater fishing areas in Central Europe. Lakes in this region regularly hold pike above 80 cm and large carp populations.

Anglers in Poland are required to hold a valid fishing licence issued by the Polish Angling Association (Polski Związek Wędkarski, PZW). Regulations vary by water body and season; checking the current rules for a specific lake or river section before fishing is obligatory.

Key species

Common fish in Polish freshwaters

  • Carp — rivers, ponds, lakes; widespread
  • Pike — most rivers and lakes; predatory
  • Zander — Vistula, Oder and large lakes
  • Bream — slow rivers and reservoirs
  • Perch — lakes and gravel pits; accessible for beginners

Licensing basics

A PZW membership card functions as a fishing permit on most PZW-managed waters. Additional permits are required for waters managed by the State Forests (Lasy Państwowe) or private owners. Full information is available on the PZW official website.
